6 Days Mount Kenya Technical Climb – Chogoria Route / Exit Naromoru

This 6-day Mount Kenya technical climbing expedition follows the scenic Chogoria Route and exits via Naromoru (Naro Moru Route). The itinerary is designed for proper acclimatization and culminates in a technical ascent of Batian Peak (5,199m), the highest point on Mount Kenya. This climb is suitable for experienced climbers or trekkers climbing with full professional guiding support.

Day 1: Nairobi – Chogoria Gate – Meru Mount Kenya Bandas

After an early morning departure from Nairobi, drive to Chogoria Gate. From the gate, begin a gentle trek through forest and moorland toward Meru Mount Kenya Bandas.
Distance: Approx. 10 km
Altitude: 2,950 m
Altitude gain: Approx. 600 m
Overnight at Meru Mount Kenya Bandas.

Day 2: Bandas – Lake Ellis

After breakfast, continue trekking along scenic ridges and river valleys with views of the Nithi Gorge. The trail gradually ascends into alpine terrain.
Distance: Approx. 9–10 km
Altitude: 3,600–3,650 m
Altitude gain: Approx. 650–700 m
Overnight camping at Lake Ellis.

Day 3: Lake Ellis – Mintos Camp

Today’s trek is longer and more demanding as you enter the high alpine zone. The route offers dramatic views of Lake Michaelson and the Gorges Valley.
Distance: Approx. 12 km
Altitude: 4,200 m
Altitude gain: Approx. 550–600 m
Overnight at Mintos Camp.

Day 4: Mintos Camp – Austrian Hut (via Point Lenana area)

A steady climb leads toward the central peaks. This day focuses on acclimatization and preparation for the technical summit climb.
Distance: Approx. 7–9 km
Altitude: 4,800–4,900 m
Altitude gain: Approx. 600–700 m
Overnight at Austrian Hut (Top Hut).

Day 5: Technical Climb – Batian Peak (5,199 m)

Early start for the technical ascent of Batian Peak, Mount Kenya’s highest summit. The climb involves multi-pitch rock climbing and requires ropes and full safety equipment. Conditions may include snow or ice depending on the season.
Summit altitude: 5,199 m
Climbing time: 8–14 hours (depending on conditions and pace)
After summiting, descend to Shipton’s Camp for overnight rest.

Day 6: Shipton’s Camp – Naromoru Gate – Nairobi

Descend through Mackinder’s Valley via the Naro Moru Route, passing through moorland and forest zones before exiting the park.
Distance: Approx. 18–20 km
Altitude: 4,200 m to 2,400–2,600 m
Altitude loss: Approx. 1,600–1,800 m

Transfer back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
